Instrument Tubing Standards

ASTM is the most common standard for the specification of tubing. It is recommended ASTM standards are obtained and read to ensure that your selection is correct. Otherwise, contact your local supplier.

Each type of tube has different standards as follows:

ALLOY 20

ASTM B468

Seamless and Welded Chromium Nickel Iron Molybdenum Copper Columbium Stabilised Alloy.

ALUMINIUM TUBING

ASTM B210

Aluminum Seamless tubing

CARBON STEEL TUBING

ASTM A161

Seamless Low Carbon and Carbon Molybdenum steel for refinery service.

ASTM A179

Seamless cold drawn low carbon steel heat exchanger and condenser tubes.

COPPER TUBING

ASTM B68

Seamless Copper Tube - bright annealed - as used where tube is required to be dirt free, applications such as refrigeration.

ASTM B75

Seamless Copper Tube- Utilised for general-purpose applications.

ASTM B88

Seamless Copper Water Tube - Utilised for plumbing applications.

ASTM B251

General requirements - Covers the requirements of ASTM copper tubing standards.

HASTELLOY TUBING

Seamless Nickel Alloy Pipe and Tube

INCONEL TUBING

ASTM- B167

Nickel Chromium Iron alloy

MONEL TUBING

ASTM B165

Nickel Copper Alloy seamless tubing - Commonly used on seawater service.

STAINLESS STEEL TUBING

ASTM 213

Seamless Ferric and Austentic Alloy Steel Boiler, Superheated and Heat Exchanger Tubes - General Service.

ASTM A249

Welded Austenitic Steel Boiler, Superheater, Heat Exchanger and Condenser Tubes - General and High Temperature Service.

ASTM 269

Seamless and welded Austenitic Stainless Steel Tubing for General Service.

ASTM A450

General requirements

ASTM A632

Seamless and welded Austenitic Small Diameter Stainless Tubing - Suitable for general service.

TITANIUM TUBING

ASTM B338

Seamless and welded titanium and titanium alloy tubes for condensers and heat exchangers.

Instrument Fitting Standards

National Pipe thread tapered and ISO parallel threads are commonly used in industry.

ANSI B1.20

National Pipe Tapered (NPT) standard for Tapered threads

ANSI B1.20.3

National Pipe Tapered Dryseal

ISO 7/1

Tapered Pipe threads

ISO 228/1

Parallel Pipe threads

ISO 262

Metric Screw threads

Other Instrument Tubing Standards

ISO 2186:2007 - Fluid flow in closed conduits - Connections for pressure signal transmissions between primary and secondary elements - This standard sets out provisions for the design, lay-out and installation of a pressure signal transmission system, whereby a pressure signal from a primary fluid flow device can be transmitted by known techniques to a secondary device safely and in such a way that the value of the signal is not distorted or modified.

ISA-67.02.01-1999 Nuclear Safety-Related Instrument Sensing Line Piping and Tubing Standard for Use in Nuclear Power Plants - This Standard covers design, protection, and installation of nuclear safety-related instrument-sensing lines and sampling lines for nuclear power plants. The Standard covers the pressure boundary requirements for sensing lines up to and including one inch (25.4 mm) outside diameter or three-quarter inch nominal pipe (19 mm). The boundaries of this Standard for instrument-sensing lines span from the root valve/piping class change, up to but not including, the manufacturer-supplied instrument connection. The boundaries of this Standard for sampling lines span from the process tap to the upstream side of the sample panel, bulkhead fitting, or analyzer shutoff valve, and include in-line sample probes.
